Essentials: What Everyone Ought To Know About Cardigans

The last knitwear essentials article I did focused on jumpers, this time round I’m going to focus on one of my favourite pieces; cardigans. The reason I love them so much is their versatility they’re so great for layering, they keep you warm in the colder months that are heading towards us. The modern cardigan is also cut closer to the body than the old school ‘grandad’ cardi’s so they’re more flattering and create a sharper silhouette.

Cardigans come in a variety of fabrics and styles. The thick knit cardigans are great to use as outer layers. When it comes to those months where it’s not very warm but not quite cold enough for a coat. Just throw on a thick knit cardigan and you’re good to go. You can use it add a bit of colour to your outfit as well. Instead of opting for the usual black or grey why not go for something brighter and stand out?

Thinner cardigans are great for layering, again they come in different fabrics. You should always go for the best quality fabric you can afford, budget cardigans will generally be made from cotton. If you’re feeling a bit flash then you can invest in something a bit more luxe like merino wool or cashmere. I think the beauty of the cardigan is using it as a piece to layer. There are loads of ways you can work it into your outfits. Simply throwing it over your shirt or t shirt as a top layer, adding a pop of colour underneath your blazer or adding one the same colour as your suit for a more casual version of the three piece. The more you experiment with the cardigan, the more you’ll realise how essential they are. I personally love using them to add colour to my wardrobe or replacing my blazer with a cardigan as a top layer. But I encourage everyone to go out and get a cardigan and start experimenting.
