A Guide to Mens Accessories

I love accessories, if you’re bored of your clothes or you feel that what you wear always feels the same then they can change your look. I tend to have a whole variety of ties, scarves along with other bits and bobs like brooches in my wardrobe that I’ll rely on from time to time when I just want to change up my outfit. I was looking back through the posts I’ve done so far and on a couple of occasions I’ve touched on accessories so decided to write this guide. This will be a general look at what accessories can do for your look and why you should have them in your wardrobe. I’ll be doing more specific accessory articles, like how to fold a pocket square, in the future. So keep watching this space!
The beauty of accessories are that they don’t really cost the earth. If you’re on a budget and don’t have a lot of money to spare for a full new out fit you can update your old looks with some new accessories such as a hat, brooche or maybe a scarf. With the right accessories you could even give your whole look a more polished, designer feel. The key to doing that is finding the right piece, keep your eyes open you can find plenty of things that may cost £15 but look like they cost £150. For example if you have a cheap shirt you could make your look feel more expensive with a nice set of cuff links which would add that extra refinement.

Designer accessories generally have a reasonable entry price to go with them. From my experience most people wouldn’t consider paying £600 for a jumper but may spend £100 for a cashmere or silk scarf. So if you do fancy treating yourself or just want to buy your first designer piece then accessories are definitely an affordable option.
I would advise as with all things you should buy make the pieces you do buy look high quality. They don’t have to cost the earth, just look like they did, otherwise they’ll have the completely opposite effect you were intending them to have. As always the details are important so use your own intuition before making a purchase.
As I alway bang on about the details lets discuss why you shouldn’t neglect accessories. I think that they really work well with casual outfits. Quite often you can get into a rut of just throwing on what’s comfortable during the day and it’s usually a lot easier to get a polished look when dressing up. If you invest in some decent accessories you can wear during the day or you’ll use on a daily basis you can easily turn your look around. I see a lot business guys dressed in suits on the commute to work. They look quite smart but then ruin the look with a sports ruck sack. You’d instantly stand out from the crowd if you invested in a decent messenger bag or small hold all which would keep your look together and smart.

I don’t know what the weather is like where you are, but it’s awful here, summer’s truly over. We often have a tendency to wear darker and more neutral colours during autumn and winter, when really you need a shot of vibrant colour the most during those seasons. Adding a scarf or a pocket square for example can give accents of colour with out over doing it and the same goes for all accessories. They’re a perfect way of adding a bit vibrancy to a toned down look.
Finally there is no better way to add a bit of personality, from the different ways to tie your tie to your watch and wallet. These little things all say a lot about you so the possibility is there to add a bit of flair and personality through the accessories you use.

If you could go into more detail about specific accessories . For example I like orange and would love to find more ways of adding that to even the most formal or casual of outfits
Keep checking the blog I’ll be doing more articles focusing on specific accessories in the future. In regards to your own example as I mentioned i the article you can use accents of colour to uplift an outfit. For a formal look, orange looks really good with grey so you could try an orange tie or a tie with hints of orange in it for a more subtly dash. Also try adding an orange pocket square and if you have a nice watch invest in a orange leather strap for it, you’ll still look formal but have touches of your own personality coming through.
For casual occasions you can be a lot more bolder and go with solid colours of orange, so for example you could add an orange t shirt to a contrasting coloured cardigan and jeans. Then accessorise with an orange watch strap, trainers or belt. If you want an even more subtle approach try replacing the laces in your trainers with a colour of your choice.
