Is Side Boob The New Cleavage?

Michelle Dockery SAG 2013

by Arash Mazinani on February 23, 2013

When they announced the dress code for this years Grammy’s there was one thing that seemed to cause a bit of a stir; side boob had been banned. When I heard about it I tweetedside boob is the new cleavage’ and got some interesting responses. This didn’t stop the likes of Skylar Grey and Miley Cyrus parade up and down the red the carpet with dresses that flashed a bit of side boob, but why all the fuss?

I don’t know how or where the trend started, maybe one of you guys can fill me in? But it seems side boob is a trend that has been growing for a number of years now, particularly for evening wear. It’s gathered momentum, mainly, thanks to the red carpet. When award season starts, which parts of their bodies the celebs decide to show off gets just as much attention as the dresses themselves, I only have to mention ‘That Leg’ and you all know who I’m referring to.

With the prospect of even more starlets ditching their push up bras, this Sunday at the Oscars, in favour of a flash of side boob, is this a trend or a look that anyone can pull off?

In short, no. There was a time when girls with a big bust were the envy of their smaller chested friends. I’ve spoken to plenty of women that have quoted not being able to wear certain clothes or pull off certain looks being the main reason they’ve considered or have had surgery.

But there are plenty of women that aren’t big busted and love the fact they’re not! Well my dear, if you want to celebrate that, this trend is definitely for you.

Generally, this look works best if you’re below a C cup, so if you’re not you maybe better off sticking to a more traditional cleavage.

You also need to be careful in choosing the right dress, too much and you’ll end up looking like Anne Hathaway showing off almost all your breast. If you’re feeling confident go for a big reveal, if you’re a little more timid choose a dress that subtly teases the side. Dresses that have mesh panels are great for a more demure look.

Supporting Cast

You also need the right supporting cast to pull this look off successfully. So make sure you stand upright with a great posture, if you round your shoulders forward like you’ve been sat at a desk all day it’ll just make your breasts droop, which you certainly don’t want for this look. So stand up tall, imagine a piece of string between your shoulder blades ‘lifting’ you up.

Lingerie tape will be your best friend to avoid any wardrobe malfunctions, after all, you don’t want to do a Janet Jackson with any slips. You can also get adhesive, strapless, backless gel bras that will give you support and a bit of lift while still remaining out of sight.

Finally, side boob aside, if you’re not confident about your boobs then don’t show them off, that goes for a traditional cleavage or side boob look. Instead, pick out a part of your body you are confident about and make that the star attraction of your outfit.

Have you rocked the side boob look? Are you a fan? Maybe you can’t stand the look? Either way I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments section below.

Fun article Arash! Side boob is definitely not for me, but I think it looks great, and very sexy, on certain celebrities.

Yeah on the right person I think it’s incredibly sexy and a lot of guys I know give it a thumbs up too. I know some people are really against it, but when done right it looks amazing.

I have seen it worn tastefully, if that makes sense, however nope, there’s no reason to don the Miss side boob over here! lol :-) But, I think the red sparkled dress above is a good example. And, yes, “that leg,” haha! We all remember that one! /Madison

Interesting post! I don’t really like any cleavage, front or side, it’s all about the outfit for me, they get noticed for the wrong reasons! maybe thats what they want though…

I actually am a fan of sideboob- just not on me! There is something sultry but not dirty about it…. or atleast that’s my feeling!

you know on the red carpet i kind of love it. i think it’s super sexy. but i don’t really see how this could possibly translate in real life. i mean i fall in the above c cup category anyhow, so can’t even remotely think about it, but like if you’re going to your friend’s wedding i don’t know if sexy side boob even on a modest breast would be appropriate.

Yeah it looks great on the red carpet. You’ll be surprised, the most daring of girls in my city rock side boob sometimes when they’re glamming it up on a Saturday night. I’m sure you’d find some girls rocking it in NYC when the sun goes down.

Yeah you’re probably right. I suppose I’m a bit low key for a place where side boobs would be revealed in this freezing weather.

I have to agree with you, Jamillah. I think it can look sexy as seen here on the red carpet and gives us smaller chest gals a way to show some cleavage without looking tacky.

However, I don’t see myself trying this trend anytime soon as I’m not sure Midwestern folks would understand it at all.

It definitely works best with a formal gown.

Lol yeah it really does depend where you live like a lot of trends/looks as to whether you’d consider it even.

Well, I definitely couldn’t pull off side boob. First off, I have big tits and desperately need a bra at all times. Secondly, because of my size, even the most modest of shirts makes me look like a hooker. So, this would just look trashy on me. But it looks damn good on other gals!

Lol, yeah it’s not really a look those with big boobs are able to pull off. However, you ladies have the positives of being able to rock a regular cleavage with no problems.
