Are Bow Ties Geeky?

I was browsing ‘yahoo answers’ out of boredom today. There are some really weird questions on there but there are also some that were quite valid ones. I stumbled upon one from a guy stating he was going on a date and didn’t know whether to wear a tie or a bow tie. He then asked if bow ties were geeky? Now I personally love bow ties, yes they are a bit geeky, but in my opinion that’s part of the fun. If you want to play it safe then stick to a regular tie, however if you want to be a bit more adventurous then give a bow tie a whirl.

The key to avoiding that geeky look is partly down to how you carry yourself. Like with most fashion if you’re wearing something that  joe blogs wouldn’t normally wear and you’re not comfortable wearing it then it’ll show and you won’t end up pulling it off.

You can play up the whole geek chic look if you want, a look that has made a come back and influenced the resurgence of the bow tie, taking it from geek to chic. Alternatively you can work it into your outfit and where you would normally wear a tie replace it with a bow tie.

A great relaxed look would be some brogues, slim fit jeans, fitted shirt with the sleeves rolled up and add the bow tie for a more relaxed look. You’ll get tons of compliments and not a single mention of ‘geek’.

Hell no….I didnt even read your blog yet, and I just wanted to say that they are not, unless you are trying to be a poindexter, then, well, you’ll be a geek. Ill read your blog now.

I’ve started to wear one to work every once in awhile, I do get comments about it. I work with computers at a hospital and I actually *want* to play into the geeky thing. Is geeky bad? ;-)

  3. I think geeky is good, there is a lot of charm in that style, especiallz when carried with personality and courage. I think just dressing like that transmits courage and a quirky personality, as you are going to stand out :)

    • Arash Mazinani says:

Yeah definitely, I just think you have to be prepared for the odd looks and comments because it is a statement piece, even though really it shouldn’t be.

  4. “yes they are a bit geeky, but in my opinion that’s part of the fun.” I agree, plus it’s all about confidence and if you feel comfortable in it!

    life/style/flash.

  5. I love bow ties on men. I think what you wrote about having the right attitude is key though. A man wearing a bow tie really has to own the look and feel confident, otherwise it won’t work.

  6. I think I’ve said this before, but I adore bow ties personally. However, I understand it’s not for everyone, but if you can don the look with confidence (like any style you love) it matters. I saw a guy the other day with a nice bow tie paired with two-toned wing-tips, it was quite amazing!

Bow ties are geeky & chic-y! I love a dude who rocks a bow tie.
