Nothing Suits Me Like A Suit

This is the first post I’ve wrote from my iPad, which is cool. I didn’t get the chance to write my usual Saturday morning post for the men’s side of the blog. So I thought I’d write it on the move. Today’s topic is all about suits, the subject is covered a lot on men’s fashion journals. But their focus is usually geared towards how to wear a suit or how to buy one. I want to look at the subject from another angle.

The reason I’m doing this is because of a comment my friend made during a recent trip to Liverpool. Six of us went on a weekend trip and night out in Liverpool, during which my friend, Clarke came up with the idea of us all wearing suits. “imagine how we’d look, six guys walking through town all dressed in a suit. I wonder how differently we’d be treated?”. I thought this was a really great point, especially as large groups of guys can often find themselves being excluded from certain drinking spots for simply being guys.

I wonder whether or not being dressed like that will have a positive impact? I have a feeling that it will, purely because of the connotations that come with wearing a suit.

You see when you see a suit you automatically think importance. If you see six you’d think that they were either mafia or high rollers. The key as always would be the fit. If all had suits correctly fitted for their body types, with out any sloppiness and good shoes they would generate a completely different response from people than if they were casually dressed.

I’m definitely eager to test this theory out and I’m going to be pushing the idea to my friends to try it next time we go away to a different city for the weekend.

It’s quite fascinating that we react so differently to people purely based on what they’re wearing. Then again if we didn’t an image consultant like myself would not have any place in the world. I’m hoping such a test will illustrate how important it is to people to make sure they look their best. In a perfect world it wouldn’t be the case but the reality of it is that many people and establishments go off their first impression of you to make a decision. Don’t give them then opportunity to think you are anything but amazing by being sloppy in when it comes to your attire.

15 Interesting Opinions to “Nothing Suits Me Like A Suit”
  1. Suit up! :) I really hope you and your friends do it, I think it would make for a really interesting post. Wearing a suit has become so corporate and business-like it’s become almost a sin to wear it on a saturday night out but I say why not?

    • Arash Mazinani says:

Yeah I think in Europe, especially places like France and Italy you see more people wearing suits and tailored garments outside of the world of business.

  2. Clarke says:

This Clarke sounds like a complete legend.

I recently bought a new suit and learnt a few things. The market for suits is completely saturated. I was going to spend £100 on a mediocre suit from ASOS. Then I found a designer suit for only £150. Shop around. Don’t settle for a bad fit or second best. Hit the house of fraser sale.

    • Arash Mazinani says:

Joker… yeah definitely shop around and buy the best you can afford. Also look for a good quality fabric.

“If you see six you’d think that they were either mafia or high rollers.” Ha! Or that someone’s been filming a Ketel One advert. So true. I’d love to know what the reactions are if six guys go out all dressed up in suits, it doesn’t seem to happen much anymore. Similarly, I’m sometimes surprised at what some women consider “dressing up” for a night out as well – there’s often a lot of black dresses and high heels, but beyond that I don’t often see interesting jewelry or a lot of attention put to a hairstyle. The more time you put into your look, the more detail, the more it shows in the end result, you know? Just like men in suits. It’s unfortunate that people judge based on what we wear – I did it myself today, unintentionally – but first impressions really are respectable!

    • Arash Mazinani says:

Yeah it’s only natural that we judge people based on what we see in the first few seconds. I’m definitely going to try and get this sorted.. even if all my friends don’t I’ll rock a suit on a night out and see how it goes down.

  4. “If you see six you’d think that they were either mafia or high rollers.”

Or, if you are me, you think “holy hotness!” Don’t forget that one, a well-fitted suit enhances the looks of every guy I know.

I love that you are going to do this experiment, and I think you are right on the money that you will be treated differently. I’ve been in situations before where I’ve seen it happen, and I don’t necessarily think its something that is done consciously by others (always). Sometimes it’s more of an ingrained response. Suits = authority = wealth = respect.

  5. Good thinking, I do most posts on the move as well, and how cool from your ipad. When I read this post I constantly hear what my mother would always tell us as siblings, “always put your best forward, especially when it comes to suiting. There’s nothing like seeing a guy in a suit, I love it when I see a well-fitted suit on anyone and think that it’s just the proper way to go.
As for six men in suits, why not? Tell me what reactions you all received, should be interesting in different cities.

I remember being in school and learning in class that first impressions are so essential, even now when we interview people at work we normally tend to know in the first 10 (or so) seconds whether or not a person will be a good fit, how crazy ‘eh? But, entirely true. People are judged everyday solely on their initial appearance. Good post.

    • Arash Mazinani says:

I think I’m addicted to tailoring I’m always looking for new blazers to wear simply because I think they always make you look good.

  6. well, it’s been a long time since i’ve been out on the town and where i live…guys NEVER wear suits out. so if i saw it here, i would think they are trying way too hard. there is a difference between men getting off work and going for a beer still in their suits (ties removed) and a group of guys wearing suits to try and get in a club. i think you should have all your friends dress as they normally would and just you wear the suit to see if you are treated any differently! =) just a thought…

    • Arash Mazinani says:

Yeah that’s a good point and something else we can try. Good point about location as well in big cities it wouldn’t seem strange but in smaller towns it may seem a bit odd.

  7. faye says:

Interesting post! and it is true that guys hardly ever wear suits outside of work i’ll be interested to see if you get treated any differently although i think you probably will xx

    • Arash Mazinani says:

Thanks for the comment, I’m awaiting the dates to our next trip and I’ll push for us to do the experiment.
