Which Item Do You Kick Yourself For Not Buying?

I was sitting this morning trying to decide what to blog about. Recently I feel I’ve had little time to actually think of blog topics to write about. Before I know it the time comes around for another post. So I tend to pick up a magazine or newspaper or get out the house for inspiration. This morning’s inspiration came courtesy of British fashion designer Christopher Kane. In an interview he was asked about his greatest regret, to which he replied “not buying things I should have when I was a student. I still wish I’d bought that McQueen or Versace, for the archive – everyone else did, and I didn’t!“. This got the brain juices flowing, if the brain has juices that is, and got me thinking about whether or not there was any items that I regret not buying. I know instantly which item it was and to this day I still search for it on the net.
The Alexander McQueen knuckleduster ring

I remember this badboy showing up when I worked at Harvey Nichols it looked super cool felt quite heavy but trod the line between being feminine and sparkly and tough and masculine really well. I considered buying one but was mainly put off by the fact I wanted to wear it out to bars and clubs. Knowing what the doormen are like at most places I thought I’d get turned away because it could be used as a weapon and particularly me being a guy wearing it. So I was unsure but then I hear that net – a – porter had an all black version when I saw that I was like wow, I want it! But still for some reason I didn’t buy it. Now I can’t find it anywhere, I can’t even find pictures of the black version. In fact it made me think did it really exist or did my brain just make it up? Do you ever get that when you can’t find something ?
So now I’m kicking myself for not buying it when I had the opportunity to. We all like to treat ourselves from time to time. But because I’m usually so strict when it comes to parting with cash, unless I really need it I can often pass up on pieces that months later I wish I had bought.
There is a fine line of knowing when your shopping for the sake of shopping and buying things you don’t need and then only buying things you absolutely need. I tend to fall in the later category and while I’d much rather be that way round I still need to learn to treat myself and buy pieces simply because I love them from time to time. I guess it’s a tight rope that runs through the middle that we all must try and walk.

Last year at a fashion show/music fest, I met this amazing designer who sold incredible pieces inspired by 18th century mourning jewelry. They had a a hi-end and a low-end label, with the lo-end running from $45 to 450, high end, using recycled gold and diamonds running into the thousands. They had some items for sell at 45 which was all I had on me and I wanted to drink beer. Since the low-end was discontinued, and I kick myself for not buying a piece I could afford. But. The beer WAS delicious!
Ha Ha, I’m glad you enjoyed the beer! In situations like that though it’s understandable because you wouldn’t want to have no money left to enjoy the festival.
I don’t regret things I couldn’t really afford, but I do regret not buying multiples of items I really loved, like my pair of Topshop ballet pumps which sold out in days, or a pair of smart jeans in the sale – they wear out and I never find an alternative. More than that my big regret is selling my Melissa/VW Ladydragon shoes. I had to, because we had money troubles, and I did so hoping that I could buy them again at a later date. Unfortunately they just go up and up in price and I’ve still never managed it! Fingers crossed…
ps – I’ve just read three of your posts in a row, and I’ve really enjoyed em. Thanks, Arash!!
Viv westwood shoes.. must have been heartbreaking to sell them. It is interesting that their price keeps going up, is that in terms of the second hand market or buying them brand new from a westwood store?
Great post dude. I regret not buying a ripped, black, suit blazer by Religion. It was a tailored peice that had a lapel torn off and was held together in a couple of places by safety pins. It was fitted and smart but edgy. Now can’t get it my size. I thought ‘when will I wear that’ and now I can’t stop thinking of times when I could wear it.
Ooo. I regret not buying a Vivienne Westwood suit when I had just about enough money to buy it, and the job and figure to be able to wear it. As the song says, enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think!
Ouch yeah I think that’s a double ouch considering you could get a lot of wear out of it as well.
Ohhhh I have quite a few regrets actually…but my biggest by far was not buying multiple pairs of jeans from this small shop here. Their skinny dark wash denim were perfect on me I went to go buy another pair after a month of wearing them straight-they were out and the shop lady they said they’d restock…they did restock but the fit was a little different, they didn’t fall nearly as perfect as the first pair. Saaaaad till this day
.
Ah that sucks, I hate it when a style you’re used changes up slightly.
me is not buying anything designer when i had a good job and good money. Always kept delaying it, thinking it was too much cash to part with. Now I’m even more into fashion and certain designers but I have no job and the prospect of finding a job in Spain that wpuld pay any decent salary is quite an “oniric” one
Oh well, one must keep dreaming I guess xx
