Essentials: What Everyone Ought to Know About Trousers

I said in my last post that I’d be coming back with another ‘essentials series’ post so here it is. If you’ve not seen any of the others or want to find out what I mean by the ‘essentials series‘ then I suggest you go back and check out the other post’s first. Particularly ‘How to get the right fit‘. So far I’ve talked about how your clothes should fit you, t shirts, jeans and jumpers. So I thought on this post I’d talk about trousers. I know a lot of guys tend to only wear trousers for work, favouring jeans for the rest of the time. But a good pair of trousers are really a staple everyone should have in their wardrobe. So let’s find out how to rock them.

The great thing about trousers are they are a lot lighter and therefore comfortable, especially for the summer months. When it comes to summer nothing beats a good pair of chino’s in a light colour. The cut’s you’ll find at the moment are more tailored, which in my opinion is a great thing. You don’t want to resemble a 50 year old CEO on the golf course with his baggy chinos and polo shirt. That’s why the fit again is crucial. You should be fine if you make the right choice when it comes to the cut. In terms of colour options you can get chino’s in a variety; from khaki to navy to maroon. The trend at the moment is to wear them with the legs turned up around the ankles then you can team them some boat shoes for a classic summer look.

In terms of formal trousers, you’re best sticking to black, grey or navy. The fabric of choice? Wool, ideally. A lot of the trousers you’ll find at places like Topman etc will be made of polyester, so if you can afford to spend a little bit more and go for wool they’ll be well worth it, your legs will thank you. Make sure you get the right length of trouser, again this goes back to making sure you get the right fit. The worst thing in the world to see is trousers that are unintentionally ‘half mast’ ie: too short. Really there should be one kink in the leg just above your shoe. However… there is always an exception to the rule. My friend who works for Italian suitor Pal Zileri mentioned that in Italy a lot of guys where their suit trousers with a turn up and intentionally a little bit shorter (See the pic below) so if you’re wanting to be super stylish you can try that look. There is nothing wrong with pairing your trousers with a slightly more casual upper body and wearing it out of work. Being slightly over dressed is never a bad thing.

In terms of looking after your trousers you should hang them upside down with a clippy hanger by the legs, this will help the creases drop out.

Let me know what you think? Are you a fan of trousers? Or maybe you’re still a devoted jeans lover?

Yeah I love hats, but I have a super small head so it’s always a struggle to find a hat that actually fits. I’ve learnt now if it fits and I like it, I have to buy it there and then or I’ll regret it.
