Essentials: What Everyone Ought to Know about T Shirts

I’m continuing the essentials series now with another staple that every guy will own; t shirts. So far in the series I’ve looked at getting the right fit, jeans and jumpers so I thought it was only right to feature t shirts next. Along with jeans they’ll be the one piece that can be found in every guy’s wardrobe. So it really is essential that when you do wear one you rock it right. T shirts are also synonymous with casual attire, but in this guide I’ll explain a couple of ways to smarten them up. So if you’re a fan of t shirts or you want to find out a few ways to work them then read on.
T shirt styles
There a few different T shirt styles that are available each of which have their benefits.
Crew Neck: Crew necks are the t shirts that have a round neck line and are probably the most well known cut of the t shirt family. Crew necks are a great starting base for layering and are really great for putting underneath other pieces. Crew necks are not that great for people with round faces.
V Necks: Excellent for elongating the body. They look a little bit more trendy than crew necks and now come in 2 flavours. A standard v neck and then a deeper v neck. Most people will stick to the standard v neck for a cool chic look in black or white.
Y Necks: Have a row of buttons running down the centre that can be left buttoned up or undone. The fact you can undo the buttons make this style useful for layering.

So now you know the different styles what are some ways you can wear your t shirt?
- One of the most obvious ways to wear a t shirt is just with a pair of jeans. Simple and classic. Ok you’re not going to get any awards for being fashion forward but sometimes you need to rely on your essential items. If you are working this look opt for a v neck as they tend to be a bit more flattering. Also make sure the fit of the t shirt is good otherwise you’ll end up looking scruffy.
- One way I like to use t shirts is to add a bit of colour to an outfit. You can layer coloured t shirts of your choice underneath jackets, jumpers, cardigans etc to add a dash of colour. It’s an easy way to avoid looking drab, especially during winter when we want to reach for those blacks and greys.
- Speaking of layering that is another primary role for t shirts. They’re basically a base for your outfit, start with a t shirt then layer with a cardigan, blazer, waistcoat, jumper or whatever else you fancy.
- One thing to avoid when it comes to t shirts is tacky logos. You should really be avoiding anything that’s heavily branded but t shirts with tacky slogans or jokes on are a definite no no.

- Also as always make sure you go for quality. I used to just get cheap t shirts thinking it didn’t matter but when you wash them they’ll loose their shape and some just don’t fit right. As always try them on before you buy and go for the best quality you can afford.
So that wraps it up for t shirts, let me know if you found this useful?
Maybe you’re a t shirt lover?

I tend to by American Apparel they’re alright and certainly better than other place like H&M. The thing I love about American Apparel is the sheer amount of choice!
haha I think this is just the most useful post. very handy indeed.

One thing I don’t get about men’s t-shirts? the low cleavage ones, you know, the exaggerated v necks and anything that shows a man’s chest. I do love a nice toned chest, but I just cannot stand this recent trend :S
I also agree about the jokes and logos. Logos are a no-no, I personally don’t like to wear anything branded in such an obvious way, the same applies to seeing men with them. Jokes, well there is a place for them, and I do find the clever/nerdy funny ones quite fun, but again, there is a place, and it’s certainly not stylish.
Love post Arash xxx
Thanks for commenting, Yeah the deep v neck ones are quite on trend at the moment. I think just a normal v is suitable enough though.
I’m not really a T-shirt lover, it’s not that I don’t like them, because there are many cool T-shirts, but I think they make me look so young and that’s something I’ve got to avoid since people already think I’m way younger than I am.
My boyfriend loves wearing T-shirts though and they look good on him

Thanks for the comment Kim
I like the vneck myself for guys but not a deep v. I think my guy prefers the crew neck but he’s not too much into fashion.
Thanks for coming through and commenting Courtney.
I agree about logo tee…you pay only the brand and the logo is always too huge! I prefer guys wear shirts or polos

some of us may think that buying a tshirt is easy, but that’s not really true. i personally like when my shirt is larger than normal, so i often go with a medium size. i’m trying to buy more colorful shirts, i realized that i need to add some color to this foggy weather. ..have a fun weekend..

Hey Arash! This is an interesting post. I did some personal styling for a colleague in my office who lost a lot of weight and wanted to make his wardrobe more stylish. We work in a business casual environment which means a collared shirt with slacks – except on Friday. When helping him tweak his wardrobe I pulled him away from the boring golf shirt/khakis look and got him buying colorful nice button-down shirts. Then I had him buy different colored solid T’s to wear under the button-down with coordinating slacks. I had him lose the pleats and the cuffs – old man pants and go with a flat front, no cuff. My point is – under a green and brown striped button down he now wears a green T. Under his black and cobalt button down, a cobalt T. Just this little touch of color underneath made such a difference in his wardrobe and made him look very put together. If you have colored logo T’s that fit well they can still be useful under button-down shirts to add color – as long as the logo does not show through the top shirt.
