How to Start the New Year with a New You

You’re probably sat watching christmas movies eating chocolate, I know as that’s what I’m doing as I write this. However with the new year hurtling towards us now is a great time to start thinking how you’re going to start it with a bang. I don’t mean setting new years resolutions as they never seem to be met. What I am referring to is setting goals that you want to achieve and start thinking of ways you’re going to achieve them. In the past I’ve ended up with 10 page long lists of my own goals and how I would set out to accomplish them. I don’t expect anyone to do the same but if you start considering them now you won’t start panicking when January has flown by and your staring at the 1st of Feb.

  • I’m going to start with exercise, I know, I know I can hear the groans already. But a healthy body is a healthy mind, or is it the other way round? Anyway, you get my drift. If you’re not already exercising in some manner then I’d encourage you to do so. It doesn’t have to be anything hardcore it can be something as simple as walking to work or taking the steps instead of the lift. If you want to aim the bar higher then go for it, just make sure whatever you plan on doing is achievable.
  • Now is also a great time to start thinking about spring summer. The collections will start to pop up on the high street and designer’s cruise collections have already began appearing in department stores and boutiques. You can check out my spring summer preview that wrote a while back. I’ll be doing a more in depth look into the SS2011 trends in the next few weeks. You may also want to invest in any winter pieces you’ve been missing while the sales are on, I’m sure you don’t need an excuse to shop.

  • You may want to set yourself a style goal, this is something I used to do year in year out. It definitely won’t be for everyone but is something that will give you clarity for the year ahead. Give yourself an image or style that you want to aim for, it maybe a celebrity who’s style you admire or just a general look. Then try and break down what it is that makes them stylish, make a look book of their styles and go out and mimic them. There is nothing wrong with doing this after all designer’s are constantly refreshing ideas and styles from the archives every season. This will help you focus when you’re out shopping. More often than not people go out and just buy whatever they see at the time. This will help you build the image you’ve always wanted and ultimately build a well rounded, versatile wardrobe.
  • If I wrote different goals that you may want to achieve I’d be here for ages. So decide on what is important for you this year and it down. The problem with goal setting is that often people write their goals but never explain how they are going to achieve them. This often results in them crumbling or getting pushed to the side and forgotten. So after you have wrote down what your goals are write down how you are going to achieve them. Put in as much detail as possible the more the better and make sure that the goals you set are achievable.

Finally for anyone that has follow my blog through 2010 I wish you a very happy and successful 2011! Thank You.

  2. Great post Maz. How do you split up you goals? I like to have goals for different areas of my life. So for instance I will normally go with these broad areas:

    - Finance
    - Career
    - Relationships/Community
    - Spirituality/Education
    - Lifestyle
    - Health

Then I go through writing my ideal day to help figure out exactly what I what I want because it’s not always obvious.

    Great post.

Goals are lovely, and I would have to agree with you on these. These are good! I also have a few aspirations for the New Year. Goal #1: I want to lose about 8 pounds (I know, odd number…) So I do exercise daily, as much as I HATE it. I would REALLY just prefer to be a pencil…(OK, so not stick-thin, but you know. If you have curves, you want to be thinner. If you are skinny, you want curves. No girl wants what she has! TRUTH.) I have two more goals, but they’re kind of secrets, so I really can’t say. Haha! Sorry to keep you in the dark. If they are ever achieved, I will probably blog about them, though. :]

I hope you had a great Christmas. I look forward to seeing your blog grow and flourish in 2011.

i’m very bad in making resolutions, and therefore i don’t make any ;) however, i try throughout the year to live healthy, such as going to the gym, eat healthy food, and i also try to be aware of the good life i live. i don’t manage it all the time, but i try to live like this!

      Thanks for the comments peeps.

@Clarke I usually split them up similar to you

      - career
      - health

      etc

As for my own goals, I really need to sit down and write some. I want to take this blog further and also expand my image consulting as well. I just found my ‘goals for 2010′ file on my computer it’s always interesting reading back to see what you set. I’m also wanting to get back in shape, ever since I went on holiday in summer I kind of let the whole diet go and have been working out sporadically. This year I’m going to go hard, I might even do a blog post about it.

Great post, 2011 is a very exciting year for me. This year I, fingers crossed graduate from the Masters program and hopefully have a job upon completion. So yes, I have many little goal between now and May 13th, My birth date and grad date. Such as research for my thesis, I will do so many hours of research each week till a certain date. And then of course the thesis writing goal I set, which I only have 7 weeks to write the 100 pg paper. Many goals for that one too!
As for jobs, I have set a goal to the number of resumes and i send out a week and dedicated a set amount of hours to search. Well you get the point.
I guess the first part of 2011 is exciting and full on uncertainty.

  7. I’ve been trying to set out my resolutions and goals for 2011, but I have to admit, exercise will not be on my list. I made that mistake last year and ended up paying for a year’s worth a gym fees for the month that I actually went. Healthier eating and more outdoor activities like hiking and walks, however, that I can handle. :)

I already set my resolutions this year which is:
    1. To start excerising. I got a 3 month membership (for christmas) to a gym that is literally up the block from where I live so I have NO excuses to not go to the gym.
    2. Build up my wardrobe. I refuse to spend my own money on H&M and Forever21 anymore. I much rather save that money and spend it on designers Sample Sales (since that is literally the only way I’ll be able to buy such labels). I’m tired of wearing all H&M stuff all the time. I’m bored with it and I rather have a some more designer labels (but pieces that i would wear all the time not just because of the name).

  9. Really liked this post! especially the coffee cup picture, where did you find that?
I do believe in resolutions, but I keep mine realistic and things I want to do, like learning something new, and if that will be hard I balance it out with a treat, like traveling somewhere.
Getting fit is one I am working hard on for months, but with a back injury it gets slowed down, but it will be a resolution and something I will work hard for.
I do like your site so much, so clean, so crisp and stylish. Have a fabulous 2011!!!!
