There seems to be a bit of a theme developing as I checked my inbox this week with a new request for a post. One of my friends had seen the blog and wanted to know how to match his tie to his shirt. Last week I received a similar request for a post on how to choose what shoes to wear with a suit. Personally I tend to stick to solid coloured shirts so pair with contrasting coloured ties. However, if you’re a fan of checked, striped or patterned shirts or ties then I’ve got you covered. After all with so many different combinations it can certainly causes headaches.
Before I move on if you want to make sure your tie is tied properly then go back and check out the previous post on that. If you’re satisfied with the knot you have for your tie then I’ll move on.
Solid Coloured Shirts – For a white shirt then you pretty much have free reign as anything will go. So if in doubt stick to a white shirt and you’ll be alright. If you really want to make the combination ‘pop’ then find a tie with a bit of white detailing in for example a polka dot or stripe. The same is the case for solid coloured shirts match the colour of the detail in the tie to the base colour of the shirt.
Checked Shirts - A similar rule applies to the checked shirt. If you have a checked shirt that is predominately white then you can wear any solid colour tie providing it matches the colour of the check. If you want to wear a tie with detail, that’s fine just make sure the base of the tie or the detail matches the colour of the check eg: blue check paired with a blue tie with white stripe.

Notice the colour of the check is matched in the tie.
Striped Shirts – The same rule that applies for checked shirts also applies to striped shirts. Make sure the colour of the stripe is paired with the base colour or the detail colour of the tie.

The colour of the tie and stripe have been matched.
You may have a patterned shirt that has a bit more detail than a simple stripe or polka dot. For example it could be a floral design, if that is the case just make sure that in the design there is a matching colour to the shirt. So if you have a blue striped shirt, make sure there is a similar colour in the floral design on the tie.

The stripe is matched to the sky blue at the base of each flower detail.
One word of warning, leave the novelty ties at home.

The bf always has me match his shirts and ties. I’m personally a big fan of pairing prints. I like checked or striped shirts with a paisley print tie in a similar color family especially.
