The Art of Refinement: It’s all in the Details

I was inspired to write this post after reading Jenna’s post about smiling over on Seven Style Notes. But obviously I’ve put my own spin on things. I’m a bit of a perfectionist at times, especially when it comes to style I often look at pictures and presenters on TV shows notice how they are always perfectly styled and groomed. You’ll often hear people say that’s impossible as they are always in make up, have their own stylists and wardrobe. That is right, however to me it’s still something that I think we should all at least take a note of.

By this I don’t mean we should all look like models and TV presenters. What I mean is that we should also strive to refine our look. The way we can do this is by focusing on the details. If you have ever read any of my posts for the gentleman you’ll hear me bang on about the details all the time. But they are so important, so easy to get right yet so many people neglect them.

When I refer to focusing on the details I mean the little things that add up to the big things. So making sure your shoes are clean and the heels are not worn down. Also making sure your clothes are freshly pressed and clean. For ladies making sure you don’t have chipped nail varnish and checking your hair is clean, brushed and well maintained. Finally making sure you wear a smile :-) .

All those things I’ve mentioned are really basic things that don’t really cost much money if any at all. They only cost you time and attention to detail. But you’d be surprised how many people fail to pick up on these things and ruin their overall look because of it.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and if you have any other examples, you can have your say by commenting below.

  1. I can’t stand leaving the house with my nails looking less than polished, yet it’s also the one thing I tend to put off fixing as well. I’ve finally gotten a bit better with painting my own nails and not making a total mess of it, but I’m terribly inpatient when it comes to sitting still until their dry no matter how many instant-dry or fast drying polishes I try. Definitely something I need to work on. But I always remember to wear my smile at least!

I agree with you on most things, I don’t like to go out if I have the feeling that not everything’s right. But I do tend to sin when it comes to the nail polish! Oops :)

I definitely have to agree with you in that it’s all in the details. One little thing can make or break an outfit. For me, I don’t leave the house without a swipe of eyeliner, it definitely brings out my eyes and adds that little polished effect. Oh, and I can’t stand chips in my nail polish! It may be the perfectionist in me, but as soon as I see a chip, I want to re-do my nails haha.
    Nice post!

  4. I agree with this post, I think personal hygiene is the most important thing. I’ve seen here and there blogger that doesnt look like they wash their hair everyday and it look yucky in the picture, couple girls that I know that is just so pretty but shower once a week… gross
I wish ppl pay attention more on their body

Oh, geez. How bad do I suck that this post has been up for like A WEEK and I missed it and you took time to give me a shout-out?! Yeah, I look pretty bad right about now! PLEEEASE Forgive me. It’s been hectic, but I am attempting to catch up!! OK, so obviously I do have an opinion on this. lol!!

I am a HUGE advocate of details. If I am leaving the house, I am going to look pulled together goshdarnit. People tell me all the time how I am always “so dressed up” and “have an outfit all together every day”…It’s like, um, yeah! I take pride in my appearance, and doing the little things like you mentioned are just so important. I’m sorry–but you just won’t find me in sweats. I do not feel like me. So blah. It’s not that hard to wear an outfit, people. Come on! Am I right or am I right? I know I’m right, so let’s just continue…

Now, on the flipside, with the smile thing–it’s important to wear that to, and I will tell you why. Because I have been told on multiple occasions that I look waaaay intimidating or something, which I didn’t believe at first, but I now know it’s probably true. People are afraid to approach you when you’re all “pulled together” and such. This miiiiight just be because I get tunnel-vision and get all focused and forget my SMILE. A smile is the best accessory. I really have to force myself to do it more–because I am not going to change my look to be less…scary? lol…so, I am adding the smile into the mix. We’ll see how it goes!

Great post. And I am glad I could inspire a teensy bit.

I enjoyed your article. I thought i was the only one who cared about the small things, but even the little things can bring an outfit together. Same thing with men, those who don’t think it’s important to iron or look in a mirror are wrong. Nice blog by the way.

Details are everything. It bugs me so much when I see things like runs in stockings and dirty shoes on people. They can make a wonderful look seem downright trashy.

Look forward to hearing from you
