Little Known Alternative Outfits for the Christmas Party

I woke up this morning and was presented with this winter’s first snow fall. I don’t know whether it was the snow or the fact my girlfriend bought me an advent calendar, but today I’ve been feeling a little bit festive. I’ve already featured a post for the ladies on what to wear for the christmas party so I thought it would be only fair to do the same for the gentlemen. So if you’re still looking for some ideas then I’d encourage you to read on.

If it’s a more formal affair then you instantly think a suit or a tuxedo. But I’m going to explore a few alternatives and clarify a few points for those that want to look really stylish this christmas.

The Cocktail Party

If you’ve been invited to a cocktail party and want an insight into what you need to wear then as guide:

  • A peaked lapel jacket in a statement fabric
  • A formal white shirt
  • formal black trousers
  • velvet or satin bow tie and cummerbund
  • patent or velvet shoes.

An alternative to the above is to wear the statement jacket, add a pocket square and loose the cummerbund and bow tie for a more contemporary twist.

Black Tie

Again if you’ve been invited to a black tie party and want a bit more clarity on what to wear then use the follow as a guide:

  • shawl collar or peaked lapel black tuexdo suit
  • contrast satin collars and side stripe on the trousers
  • wing collared formal white shirt
  • Black sating bow tie and matching cummerbund
  • square folded white pocket square
  • black patent shoes

An alternative for for a black tie event is to keep the tuxedo but opt for a navy or more dark subtle colour and loose the bow tie in favour of a narrow tie with a regular collared white formal shirt.

Office Party

For an office party keep it simple stick to black two button suit and a white shirt. If you want to try something a bit different try replacing the black jacket with a velvet one and remember the fine details such as a pocket square to give it a little edge.

Casual

It’s better to be over dressed than under dressed. Unless the invite specifically mentions you’re going to be engaging in any odd activities then keep it smart and refined. Stick to a well cut blazer and jeans. Finished with a pair of brogues, remember even though its party time it’s best to leave those garish novelty shirts and ties at home.
