Winter Warmers: How to find the Perfect Coat

This week was the first time since summer that I had to break out my gloves, it was freezing! I’m also in desperate need for a stylish winter hat, other than trapper hats whenever I hit the high street I’m faced with rows of hats only fit for a smurf and if you have seen my photo, you’ll notice hair is something I greatly lack. That’s why a hat is such a winter staple for me to protect from frost bite of the ears, ouch! Another winter staple is a good coat and everyone needs one. When it’s cold outside your coat is the first thing that people see so really it’s crucial that it fit’s perfectly, it’s warm and makes a statement.

Most coats aren’t cheap, even if you’re shopping on the high street a good coat can cost you around the £100 mark. That’s why it’s important to take your time and consider your investment. It has to work with the rest of your wardrobe, however shouldn’t be considered basic just because you wear it everyday. You want to invest in something that you can’t wait to pop on.

Here are a few things to consider before making your purchase:

  • Your coat is your outer layer so can make or break your shape.
  • The most universally flattering look will highlight the waist and be about knee length.
  • The longer you go the more formal the coat is considered.
  • Remember you can always cinch in the waist with a belt.

I’ve gone through and picked a few different styles, the majority are classics that will look good year in year out. I’ve also picked one of my favourite styles that are on trend right now.

The classic

A straight slim cut coat will work with anything you throw at it. Black and Navy are staples, but if you want to glam it up consider white or ivory, just make sure you’re not taking public transport in those colours. Camel is another colour that’s right on trend this season.

Peacoat

Again this coat works well with casual styles but is also well structured for work or more formal occasions, make sure the cut is slimming, try and avoid anything too boxy.

Military

Military seems to appear every autumn/winter so I’d consider it a classic style. Military inspired coats with epaulets always look well tailored and the hardware on the coats add’s a nice bit of character.

Cape

A nice alternative to a coat, they’re usually quite roomy so allow lots of layering underneath, perfect for keeping warm.

Fur

Right on trend at the moment, I love how you can flip fur coats to make them look real vintage or super luxe.

Honourable mentions that I haven’t included are the trench coat which I personally feel is more suited to the transitional season’s when it’s not that cold. The princess cut, although super feminine is more suited for evenings.

I used to have such a hard time finding coats I liked, but this year, I’ve come across two coats that I love! Also have my eye on another one :) For me, the peacoat is probably best since I’m not tall.

finding the right coat is not an easy task – but i found mine two years ago and i still wear it!! it’s from sandro, and i love it! the fact that the coat is very simple and chic, made it timeless. i bought a fake fur vest a couple of days ago – it’s such a fun vest! will post it on my blog soon =)

Love the coats you have picked out, generally i love to go for simple longish ones, i tend to stay away with ones with belts because i always lose them…… mens hat wise…. gotta be a trilby!!! :)

  8. Meagan says:

I love coats and these are all beautiful pieces. Although lots of people can use one coat all season long, I love to have a variety of coats, and try to spread out buying them, since like you mentioned, they can get expensive. These are all coats I think every closet could use!

Great post- so true that cream/ camel coats are a no-go on public transport! I’ll be opting for miltary style I’m thinking!

  10. Laura says:

I love fur coats they make me feel warm and a bit glam! although I think they look hideous when I have my hair up for some reason. I am beginning to feel that you need a few different coats as not all suit everything you wear. As an hour glass shape though they will all need some sort of waist cinch. Loving this site and would love to see more about different styles for different shapes x

  11. I love a peacoat – it’s cute and comes back year after year!

I have a love/hate relationship with coat season. I hate winter because I hate the cold. But I love coats and seeing all the fabulous new styles. I just bought my new winter coat. A fabulous bright red pea coat. I can’t wait to wear it!
