Style Icons: Lady Gaga

Whether you love her or hate her Lady Gaga is an international superstar selling millions of records world wide and generally leaving heads turned where ever she goes. My first encounter with Lady Gaga was when I first heard her single just dance. I had stumbled upon it either via youtube or on some other website and it was one of those songs that as soon as I heard it I knew it was going to be huge, you just knew it was going to be one of those party girl anthems. While her music is not really to my personal taste there is no denying that she causes a stir with what she wears.
I was thinking about her as a style icon as she doesn’t immediately jump to mind when you conjure up the image of someone stylish. I’d usually think of people like Alexa Chung or perhaps Cheryl Cole, someone that is always dressed perfectly for the occasion. Lady Gaga doesn’t really fit into that mould, her outfits, as amazing as they are can sometimes just be out and out strange.
But when I think about it a little deeper and delve past my own stereotypes of what makes a ‘style icon’ you can actually see how she fits. Lady Gaga is the epitome of one expressing themselves through style. She doesn’t really give a damn about what people think of her she goes out wearing whatever she wants whether that be a Giorgio Armani number from her latest tour or latex hot pants and 6 inch killer heels.

She regarded the late great Alexander McQueen as a personal friend and Giorgio Armani describes her as a “modern fashion phenomenon” but we can all learn from this style icon. How often have you been reluctant to buy or wear something because of what your friends may say or simply what people may think. I know I can hold my hand up to that, we should all take a leaf out of Lady Gaga’s book and wear what we want, when we want, after all our style is about our expression and no body else’s.

She definitely causes a stir, but I’m not sure if I consider her as a style icon myself. I guess that’s because what she wears is usually so outrageous that “normal” people find it hard to relate to that? Anyway, she should do what makes her happy
but sometimes I wonder if she ever has the strong need to just put on some jeans and a T-shirt?

Ha Ha yeah that is a very good point, she probably wears hoody’s and jogging pants at home.
I think she’s a style icon, definitely! She is brave and I take away the same thing from Lady Gaga in my own fashiono style…never be afraid. Great post!
She’s definitely not boring in her fashion, I love that about her!

i personally think that she just dresses that way to sell records. prior to signing her contract she dressed nothing like that she was the stereotypical 20 something. so no i dont think she is a style icon. everything about her is publicity!
lady gaga is such a unique person, and to be like this, i think you have to be a little crazy =) even though i would never wear the clothes she wears – i guess that would be too much for me – she rocks!

I would have to say that I agree with you, Arash. And I know my opinion has been criticized on this in the past, but I view it quite simply. To me, a style icon is someone who absolutely ‘owns’ their look. Gaga is the epitome of this. I personally do not like the way she dresses, but as someone who would describe my personal style as ‘classic with flair’ you can see why we don’t relate at all! But really. More power to Lady Gaga for taking fashion risks. She has the whole world talking about it, and maybe we should evoke more emotion with our clothing choices! Haha…great insight.

P.S.
Totally agree about Alexa and Cheryl too. Honestly. I love British style! It’s just a different vibe from the All-American look. You guys get it so right…
I’m also in two minds when it comes to Lady Gaga, when she first jumped into the commercial music pool I remember her stylists pushed her into a similar category to Rihanna who was everywhere at the time and really expressed the fetish theme with the corsets and pony boots etc. From then on she became more experimental but as a personal look it’s never really been my thing although I do believe that you should rock what u’ve got and not worry about what people think if you like something.
Very nice post!
