If I had to pick one of my favourite things to have in my wardrobe then it would probably be knitwear. If I think about what I own and what I always seem to end up buying or looking at when I’m out shopping for myself, then it has to be knits! The reason I like them so much is due to their versatility, there is never an occasion where a knit of some sort would fail you. They’re equally useful as a formal or casual staple, so in this article I thought I’d look at a few ways you can work your knitwear this Autumn Winter.
- If you’re sick of wearing drab colours when the seasons change then grab yourself a v neck jumper in a bold warm colour and try layering under your winter coat or a blazer. Alternatively you can pick up a v neck in neutral colour and add a subtle hint of a vibrant colour with a shirt underneath. Try picking a colour that will work with the rest of your wardrobe.
- For casual looks try picking up some knitted accessories like a knitted tie, these won’t break the bank, you can usually get some from vintage stores, but will bring the whole outfit together.
- Knitwear now comes in all shapes and sizes, try using a thick cable knit cardi instead of a winter coat. If you’re anything like me then I hate it when I get too hot during that transitional time of the year, it’s cold but sometimes not cold enough for a winter coat, this is the perfect time to use a thick knit as your top layer.
- Try layering underneath items for a really chic look, it works for a more formal look but also for casual-smart occasions. Swap a thin knit for a waistcoat to create a 3 piece suit look, alternatively add a thin cardigan underneath a blazer with a t shirt and jeans. Just leave one button done up on the cardigan to keep it casual.
- Invest in a black cardigan as it’s a classic piece that will last, if you can afford go for one in cashmere as it will be perfect for summer or winter. Try using a black cardigan when you’d usually wear a blazer for a nice alternative.
- When working with bold or patterned knits keep your colours underneath them neutral, likewise if you have a neutral colour on top then you can work with something brighter underneath it.
- Try working alternative knits like roll necks for a cool mod 1960s chic look underneath a suit, knitted polo shirts as a warmer alternative to cotton and a vest tank top for that preppy look.
