I’m aware up until now the blog has mainly been catering to a younger female audience. While I try my best to focus on fashion and style articles that everyone can learn from, it has been pointed out to me that I don’t feature enough articles for the more mature lady. This was kindly brought to my attention one day when my girlfriend came back from visiting her parents, she had shown her mum the site who quite enjoyed it but felt most of the articles weren’t really much use to her. Well… today I’m changing that so if you feel the same way then this article is for you!
We’re going to look at a few tips to stay elegant and chic with out having to keep up with the latest trends. So if you’ve ever wondered ‘do I look like I’m wearing my daughters clothes?’ or got to a point where you want to look stylish but have kind of lost your way a little then these top tips are definitely going to leave you looking fabulous.
- Style is about inner confidence just as much as it is about what you wear, you can check out our feature on what makes someone stylish here. If you choose to wear something daring like a mini skirt in your 50s then more power to you, but you must be prepared for the looks and raised eyebrows you may get if you don’t pull it off correctly. If you think your mini skirt wearing days are up, then there are plenty of chic options that turn heads for all the right reasons.
- Go for pieces in classic solid colours such as browns, navy and black and make it interesting by choosing intricate cuts and details such as pleats or gathered waists.
- Blousey styled tops will give a nice soft contrast to structured pieces again these don’t have to be boring opt for a scarf tie or ruffle front for extra details. If the top is quite volumous then make sure it doesn’t end up too OTT by shying away from prints and bright colours.

- For skirts make sure the hem line is not too high and stick to classic cuts which will work well with your tops that have that extra detail. If you want a skirt that’s a bit more sexy then look for a bit of lace detailing again the more detailed your skirt the less detailed your top needs to be.
- A blazer is a great investment and will look good on anybody regardless their age, you can dress it down during the day and also dress it up for an evening. If you want something for those evenings when you need a bit more glamour then you can go for a short fur number or a satin jacket.
They key is to build up your wardrobe with timeless chic pieces, that way no matter what you mix and match you cannot go wrong. Next time you go shopping look out for subtly decorated knits, well tailored coats and trousers and the pieces we’ve already mentioned. If you’re shopping for an evening, look out for dainty, delicate details and if you want to add a bit of sexiness to the look add subtle shots of lace to keep it refined.

Sound advice, but perhaps women of “a certain age” should also be encouraged to be edgy in a different way with accessories.
Yeah thats a very good point!
Great post Arash. Also an interesting article in today’s Sunday Times Style magazine about OAFFs (Old Age Fashion Fans). Looking at ‘over fifties’ celebrities over doing it in the fashion stakes. There is a new book coming out in May called Advanced Style by bloggers of the same name looking at those who get it right. Kate x
Really? I’m going to have to keep an eye out for it, thanks for commenting Kate
